What would a socialist city look like?

How would it differ from the image of a modern US city? A lack of small business establishments (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.)? Lines of people queing up for their daily supply of food from the centralised food production industry?

I'm writing a few short stories set in a completely socialist, modern state, and I'm just wondering what that might look like.

If it makes any difference, say that said state has only recently (last 10 years) made the transition from capitalism into socialism.
