Advice for a pleb looking to join the master race

After about a year of bugging, I finally got the agreement from the wife to build a gaming rig. I will definitely be going with a 1080 ti. The obvious choice for the processor has been an i7 7700k. With the announcement of the new gen processors though I began looking at them. The initial reviews weren't highly positive. Is that still the case? I just want to make a build that will last the longest possible. If a couple hundred dollars gives me the best experience I'll go with it. But if that couple hundred dollars doesn't improve the experience any then I will put that money towards other aspects of the build. Thanks for the info and insight.
