Question from a beard noob...

Hi all! Basically I've had a beard on and off now for a couple years (been going through tough times so basically haven't really put shaving at the top of my priority list), but recently I've met someone that says they like my beard. I've attempted to trim it using a pretty nice electric shaver I was bought for xmas, and so far while it looks better than it has done in the past it still looks patchy and, for want of a better phrase, 'a bit shit' in others. Under my chin doesn't seem to grow as thick as everywhere else and while I've tried to even out the edges I either just don't have the experience or there's something I'm doing wrong? Plus my moustache just looks awful as it doesn't grow anywhere near as fast as the rest of my face.

With that in mind, what advice do you all have for someone in my position? I'm not after a full on zz-top look, but I also want it longer than just basic stubble. I would post a pic of how it looks right now but my camera's fecked unfortunately. I'm basically just after a nice, even beard that's about 1.5-2cm long, and looks neat around the edges? Something smart and presentable while still being bushy you know? I know this might sound like a stupid question and for that I wholeheartedly apologise.
