Can't get monitor to work with computer

I just built my first computer and it seems to be turning on fine but there is some problem when I try to get into the bios the monitor will turn on then off but if I turn it on and don't try to get into the bios the screen is just black but on. Windows isn't installed yet but the USB with Windows on it is plugged into the motherboard all of the fans spin and the motherboard lights are on, any ideas on what to do
