Most comptetitive shooty army?

I haven't played since 5th, but would like to get back into 40k. I sold all my Eldar and DW years ago, so I will be building this ~2000 point army from scratch. If I had to define my play style it would be "avoid melee whenever possible" and "take as few units/models as can be while remaining competitive." I have no idea what race/subdivision to build the army from, that will be both competitive and jives with my playstyle best. DW, Eldar, Tao, all caught my eye but I've been out of the seen for so long I don't know if others do it better.

Or to say it another way, what is the best (best being most competitive) shooty army that can be built right now?
