Unacquainted Flower

Feedback Received!

Red-yellow bloom
What is your name?
You look so like
The eye of flame
I wonder if
At night you keep
The dark at bay
E’en as you sleep
And if your heat
Would drive away
The peckish deer
That comes your way

I long to have you
For my own
But know it was not I
That sown
And I would rather
See at dawn
When shadows fade
Until they’re gone
Your petals reaching
At your height
To greet the morning
Dressed in light

I think your poem is very pretty. And I find your rhyme scheme interesting. It's different but I like it, I feel like it gives it a nice flow. Out of curiosity did you purposefully keep your lines so short or did the poem just flow from your mind that way?

I hoped to keep it very simple, as the thought behind the piece lent itself to simplicity. Thank you for your kind words!

this is an interesting change from a strict dimeter, to a much freer sound, but I worry that your decision to keep the lines short as they are come from a confusion of how you want the pacing to go. Just based on your punctuation, I'd say you're asking the reader to pause at line breaks, but this disrupts the rhythm at the later half, in ways I found unpleasant ('But know it was not I/That sown' and the last four lines especially). I think embracing a more traditional grammar will allow you better control over this issue.

Unplucked blossoms; unrequited love. I like the layered petals in your imagery. The underlying meter works well for me, but the structure on the page made navigating the changes a little difficult, necessitating a few steps back at times.

I've had this experience before, in a few different ways, and I appreciate how you express it.

Name checks out. Must be a Fremen poem. :)

My only critique is to keep the rhyming word at the end of a sentence. Since your rhyme scheme is ABCB this could quickly be translated to an AA BB CC DD rhyme scheme by collaspsing two lines into one. This should help the reader know the flow. IMHO

First half is great. The flow is soft and connected. The short lines work very well here. The second half does feel a bit off just because the line breaks create a sort of awkward space between unfinished thoughts. Overall, I love the rhyme scheme. It fits the structure well.
