The Fate Motive

Feedback Received!

This is an experiment with meter for me. Please be brutal as I'm not even sure what I think of it. Specifically, I'd like feedback on meter, rhythm, pacing, etc. How it feels to read it.

What is a man?
What is a man?
Is he a beast? Is he a fiend? Is he a monster?
Is he an angel, or a god, or an intention?
Can he impose?
Can he attend?
Can he contend with fate?

I heard a tale
I heard a tale
The hero lost, he was forgot, he was forsaken
The villain gone, it was a ghost, an apparition
What is our hope?
Where is our peace?
When is the end?
Can we approach?
Can we ascend?
Why is there hope in us?

There is a weight, a bearing down, a ticking clock, a subtle force
There was a time when he was free and he was glad to go unhindered
Now he can see a slivered glimpse, a peering light, a seeming missive
Yonder, the horns, they call.

He, for a moment, sees a vision:
The Lion laying with the lamb
Shepherds inviting him to join
Rolling clouds amass above them
A searing ray descends from heaven
As the thrill intensifies, his soul marries divinity and just as he is liberated, he is swallowed by the earth

He wakes on earth
He feels his skin
He feels the pain, he feels the grief, he knows its presence
Never-the-less, he saw the truth, he saw the vision
Devils will come
Fate has her way
But Man has mind, soul, will.
