Year in Review: 2013
Greetings and salutation, we thought it might be fun to try something new on r/vinyl, a “Year in Review” vinyl edition, where once a week or month (depending on how well this is received) we discuss records that we own that were released within a particular year. It does not matter if you have the test pressing, 1st pressing or a recent reissue, as long as the album was released within that particular year and you have a copy then post a picture of it, tell us why you have / like the album, is there a particular story behind the album that makes it special to you, did you have your first kiss to side two track 3 of the album, was it hard to hunt down. Anything goes. For our first Year in Review we have chosen 2013, the year Boston Marathon Bombing shocked the world, the year that Snowden began releasing a series of classified documents and the year we said goodbye to Nelson Mandela. On the music front we farewelled the great Lou Reed but witnessed Lorde take the world by storm with her debut Pure Heroine. 2013 saw the release of some monumental albums: Kanye West, 'Yeezus'; Daft Punk, 'Random Access Memories and Vampire Weekend, 'Modern Vampires of the City.
What was your soundtrack to 2013?
For me it was a female rock duo under the name Deap Vally and their debut album Sistrionix. After being dragged to their gig by a friend I was in love, both with the sound and with the ladies behind the sound. It was a tiny gig with no more than 50 people attending and we were lucky enough to hang out with the pair after the gig and shoot some pool. They were like a mix of The White Stripes and a 70s rock band. I can’t even begin to imagine how many times I spun their album in 2013/2014, be it as a gym workout mix, or cruising down the beach with the roof down, blasting the dirty sounds of Lies was very much how I remember the year.
