Need help choosing family-friendly classics for a series of film screenings
I founded a Miami-based film initiative called Thousand Movie Project, which at its heart is my personal effort to watch all of the movies in Steven Jay Schneider's 1001 MOVIES YOU MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE and post an essay about each one to my site, but, for the past few months, I've also been buying screening licenses to host free movie screenings around Miami.
Most vendors are pretty spotty about committing to it but there's this one awesome huge tea shop that's basically committed, long-term, to the effort. Two months ago he let me host a screening of A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (1935), a Marx Bros comedy, then last month I hosted a screening of LITTLE CAESAR (1931) and in two weeks I'll be hosting BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN ('35). It's been refreshing to see how engaged people are with these old movies -- but I think I'd like to move closer to the present day with forthcoming screenings. ONLY ISSUE: IT'S GOTTA BE FAMILY-APPROPRIATE. I think that if we host the screenings at 8 p.m. we might be able to get away with PG-13 (I was thinking of jumping ahead to ARACHNOPHOBIA for Halloween).
tldr: I need recommendations for older, obscure movies that might still be of interest to a modern audience. But I'd really like the virtue of the Project to be that I'm screening movies people might not otherwise find.
