Sons of the Devil #11-14
I finished the 3rd (and final) arc of Sons of the Devil this past weekend. As a series I feel like it stayed very consistent from beginning to end...which can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you feel about any particular part of the series.
ART
For me, the art on this title just didn't really cut it. There's alot of positive things that can be said about it though. The coloring really worked with the story with a palette that was really dark and gritty almost all the time, which is exactly what the story was like. The page layouts were great and from a storytelling perspective I was very happy. In fact the actual panel layouts were done really great too but it just seemed as though the artist ended his penciling/inking at the layout stage and moved onto the coloring phase. Now...I totally understand that this is actually the artist's style and intention and that to alot of fans it's perfect as is. However, you know how sometimes when an artist provides some back matter where they show the different phases art goes through from blank page to finished page? Sons of the Devil feels like it's 2 steps before the finished page and released....at least to me. I was hoping for less abstraction and more detail.
STORY
The final arc of the series did a decent job of wrapping the story up and providing closure to the reader. However, very similarly to Nailbiter...I feel like the series was this big situation that we're constantly given more and more insight into and then it just very predictably ends with a quick hook like a common horror movie. That's fine and all. I was happy to read it and got my money's worth...but I don't know that I could say I was floored by anything I read. My biggest issue is that, due to the nature of the story, so many of the characters seemed so similar to each other in their personality and motivations. I had a hard time finding a connection to most of them, but they were written well enough as storytelling devices.
What did you all think? Was there some hidden wisdom in the story that I didn't get? I like hearing what other people think of books.
