My dog has been coughing a lot recently

My dog has been coughing for a while now. We thought it was something he ate, but recently it has become worse. It started sounding deep. He is still able to sleep soundly at times, but when he's awake his cough grabs a hold of him and doesn't let go. Is it something that normally happens and is there something I can do to help him?
