Image Quality of Today's Strip

Has anyone else noticed that whenever today's strip is posted, whether here on Reddit or in collection books, or elsewhere, the image quality leaves much to be desired? It's always bugged me since I noticed it years ago. Was it a bad copy Watterson sent, or the original scan of it for publication was bad? Thoughts?
