When should I group?

I was duoing with a friend of mine and we had a friendly discussion in the middle of the game about grouping. He defended that if we are far ahead in kills we should just group mid and try to force towers even if they are five mid as well but I thought I would be a waste of time.

So my question is, when you get the tier 1 towers what should you do and when should you group to push?
