"full tang" axe handle idea?

Hey guys, I have a smaller hatchet that is beginning to develop a crack up the middle of the handle by the head... it's running almost perfectly up the middle of the handle, so I was thinking as a way to salvage/save the handle, have any of you run a 1/8" steel plate (same profile as handle) as a way to save it?
