Seeking ethical advice: a musician in an interview gave some kind of offensive answers.
I've got a bit of a situation I'm dealing with right now as an editor, and I'm very interested in hearing some advice on how you'd proceed...
A writer spoke to a semi-well-known musician who's got an upcoming show in town, for a quick 'celebrity interview' kinda promotional piece. The writer sent them some questions via email, and, through their publicist, they emailed back some answers. Should be simple. But: one of the answers - basically out of nowhere - was pretty offensive against a particular ethnic group.
I have two questions:
-
How would you proceed with this? I feel a responsibility to publish the remarks, but I also think they can't go without commentary. I'm thinking of including a separate editorial comment condemning their remarks. Does that sound appropriate?
-
Would it be a good idea to contact the artist/their publicist to let them know what I'm doing, or to get a second comment? Do I offer them the opportunity to retract? As I said, the remark was given in an email and sent through their publicist - so it's not like it was some off-the-cuff remark. They had time to give it a second thought or to edit themselves, and they didn't.
Thanks for your help. This is somewhat uncharted territory for me.
