How are we supposed to level magicarp...?

In the game, you can start the battle with your magicrap, then switch to a pokemon that can actually kill the thing. By sharing experience, you can slowly level your magicrap. Because experience sharing doesn't seem to be a thing in this.... how are we supposed to unlock our gyarados?
