Bethesda's Creation Club

So yeah, old news, but I felt like I just wanted to point out some stuff I've been thinking about since it was announced that I don't see discussed much in videos or discussions on it.

  1. Some people are outraged at the idea that mod creators will only be paid for developing the mod, not share a portion of the revenue made. That actually makes complete sense to me. The creation club is essentially a way for Bethesda to contract out DLC to third party developers. Have you ever heard of developers getting a share of the profits for the games they worked on? They get payed a regular salary, or negotiate a standard fee with the company contracting them to make it. I'd actually be outraged if Bethesda had worked out some model of profit sharing, regular game developers are horribly mistreated in this industry already. The mod author is still payed for their work, so I don't see the outrage.

  2. PC mods through third party tools will always be free, but I can't help but feel this is an experiment to see if they can get away with making all future BethesdaNet content for games "Creation Club Only". ie, Console players will have no choice in the matter. If they want to mod their games, they'll have to pay for it. Microtransactions with a new coat of paint.

  3. It also feel like a way to even more artificially extend Fallout 4 and Skyrim's life cycles. By all accounts we aren't getting another game in either series until early to late 2020's. This could be a good or bad thing. It could mean that they'll have the money and time to deliver better games (maybe not better polished games, this is still Bethesda, but maybe they'll actually hire some full time writers at least?). Or it could mean they see how many fat stacks they're making for no effort whatsoever and continue on the current path of making their games simpler and more linear, so the draw to spend a couple bucks is even more intense.

I don't know. I'm bored on a Monday morning and want to start shit, I guess.
