Product Photography Advice

I own a small tableware company and have been using my iPhone for product pictures. The quality of the pictures is just not cutting anymore and I am looking to upgrade. The photography field is one that I am not extremely familiar with and I have been reading through blogs and discussion boards in hopes of figuring out what I need. The pictures I take consist mainly of overhead shots of table settings and products (dishes, flatware, glassware). Is there a certain camera or lens that you would recommend for this? I am not looking to spend thousands and thousands but I understand I will have to invest something in order to achieve the quality I am looking for.
