TDF Islands theme
Designed a TDF with a theme of Islands, starting with grand depart on the Isle of Man with a quay-side Prologue around Douglas
Then a 100km sprint stage to Castletown for stage 1.
Following that we're on to Anglesey for a fairly easy but rolling day around the island for stage 2,
Stage 3 we start in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and finish in the university town of Bangor up the Glanrafon Hill a fairly short but very steep climb. Prior to that the riders take a tour around the Snowdonia region. (profile editor messed up on this one, from the finish proceed forwards past the police station and take the right turn after the big building on the right and up that hill to finish just before the split (cars go left riders go right)).
Stage 4 We proceed onwards from Llandudno towards Sheffield, mostly following the main roads until we get to Yorkshire when it gets lumpy enough to hopefully drop the sprinters and see skinny people sprinting for the win in town.
Stage 5 Finally something for the sprinters again with a 240km stage from Nottingham to London, inspired by RideLondon this weekend I tried to make an interesting run in to a finish on the mall from the other direction.
Stage 6 Back to the Islands theme with a seriously lengthy TTT around the Isle of Wight, the key will be to stay together in the first half with the climbs to drill it on the roads back to Yarmouth.
Stage 7 We take a trip to the Netherlands for a very long and very flat stage, even going BELOW sea-level at one point (according to route profile anyway!) Should be one for the sprinters unless the winds blow and the GC guys get going.
Stage 8 Starting outside the Roubaix Vélodrome and finishing in Charleroi via some long straight roads. Hoping the wind is strong to split things up a bit before a finish similar to this years stage 3 finish in Longwy.
Stage 9 We continue heading south from Reims to Nancy, a day for the punchers or a small break over the last climb.
Stage 10 Strasbourg- La Planche des Belles Filles straight from Strasbourg around the edge of the Vosges and up this modern classic of a climb.
Stage 11 Mulhouse - Lac Blanc Bike Park. A downhill run in to a steep uphill kick to the line.
Stage 12 Besançon - Gex another uphill finish similar to the previous days but with a bit more flat after the last descent and before the last climb.
Stage 13 Oyonnax - Mont Tendre. The second true mountain finish, I chose to place the finish line slightly after the summit (500m-1km) as the climb is very steep the whole way.
Stage 14 Lausanne- Chamonix via the Mont Blanc Tunnel. After seeing the use of a tunnel in the tour de suisse this year I thought I would include the Mont Blanc tunnel but note- the elevation is wrong it does not go over 3000 meters (it gives the elevation of Mont Blanc not the tunnel) but is still not a easy climb.
Stage 15 Chamonix - Les Chavonnes. Back out the way we came in, through the tunnel before heading southwards to the finish at Les Chavonnes where the riders descend the other side of the mountain before climbing up the reverse side with its many hairpins and steep final section. Expect this stage to be exciting as is only just over 100km in length
Stage 16 After a short stage 15, we have a very long stage 16 from Chambéry to Gap. Starting by going up the now infamous Mont du Chat and finishing into Gap down that descent where Froomey unclipped and LA skipped a corner could be an interesting stage.
Stage 17 We haven't been to an island since the stage 6 TTT, so we have a relatively easy sprint day in the North of Corsica from Calvi to Bastia. A technical run in means positioning will be key.
Stage 18 Bastia - Col de la Restonica. Nothing particularly tricky during the day, what the profile of the final climb doesn't show is that it has a flat/downhill part after the initial slopes, and when you cross the river with 4km to go the road just kicks up violently; expect fireworks.
Stage 19 Aleria to Ajaccio. Coast to coast, the hardway. After an initial jaunt northwards back through Corte this time the south side of the town they head towards Ajaccio over the Col de Vizzavona before diverging from the main road to head further south to take in more climbs before going North into town with a finish into the Carpark of the AC Ajaccio football club at 10-15% ramp.
Stage 20 After a tour heavily stacked in favour of climbers, a long 76km TT from Ajaccio to Sartene. Starting where they left off yesterday this is a long& hilly TT to try and bring it back in favour of the TT guys who can put the power out as well as go uphill like lightning bolts.
Stage 21 Compiegne - Paris champs elysées. Paying tribute to Paris roubaix starting in Compiegne and going through most of Paris before 8 laps of the finishing circuit.
Total distance is approx 3664 kilometres.
I know the Anglesey and north wales areas well, same for Corsica and London, Isle of Man i designed with a friend from there but the middle I was kind of just guessing where to click. Any feedback is greatly appreciated and thanks for creating this sub :)
