Slick back/side part - styling question

So i have a question. I have had this hairstyle since about October of last year with some variants in how i style it..but in general, a side part slick back with a skin fade.

I have a thick/full head of hair. Length comes down to tip of nose (4-5 inches).

I use Tip-Tip pomade..(water based). I use about a knuckle (maybe a little less) of the pomade. Towel dried, etc. (damp but not too wet) I can't seem to get it tight enough to my head..I feel I have too much volume..

Do I use more product? Get my hair cut shorter so there isn't as much to hold down?

Like this dude in the Layrite video, is nice and tight to his head - which I can't seem to achieve..maybe if I use a TON of pomade?
