Opinion on my essay idea?
Hey, I am going to apply for the Upenn m&t program, which combines Engineering and Business.
Prompt: Explain how you will use this program to explore your interest in business, engineering, and the intersection of the two. (450-600 Words)
I have been brainstorming ideas and would like feedback on this certain idea:
General Outline:
-
Anecdote/Story
-
Tie into interests of business+engineering
-
Tie into how M&T will meet these interests using specifics
-
Summarize
For the specific anecdote, I was thinking I would talk about my independent study in programming class + my grandfather. A large theme in this M&T program is how many people in places of leadership are not able to effectively communicate to their engineers/scientists because of a lack of experience/knowledge.
In my independant study class in programming, I worked with a fellow classmate and a teacher in order to create an app for the school. This app was a "Bell" app which would notify teachers when classes ender/were about to start because the school had no bell system already in place. (the specific app doesnt matter). However, the issue was that my teacher had no background in programming, and my classmate was less experienced than I was. This led me to see that I had to use methods of leadership/business in order to effectively communicate with my teacher and classmates, so my teacher knew what was going on/possible and my classmate knew what he had to work on.
My grandfather was initially a helicopter engineer for the army. However, he noticed his superiors lacked the knowledge to effectivly lead his team, so he went to school to earn an MBA so he could become a project manager. With his combined mindset of engineering+business, he succeeded and eventually went on to lead projects for NASA on the international space station and helicopters for the President.
Do you think I could effectively combine these two topics and relate them to engineering+business by discussing my interest in engineering and my notice of the lack of knowledge in places of leadership? How effective of an essay do you think this could make?
Thanks for reading.
