Code testing with repository

I’m a relative newbie to R. I’m working on some code that I’ve committed to a GitHub repository. Are there best practices for code testing before you push changes to the repository?

Do I create a duplicate file? Open to any recommendations on how to prevent the “test” script from being followed while I test the script?
