How do Chrono Trigger and Cross tie together?

I have played both many years ago but I am replaying Trigger now and Cross again right after. Would someone without voicing there opinion on how much the connection sucks or whatever (seen much of that on the web) actually explain it to me? I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks fans!

Edit: Thanks u/ghost-from-tomorrow showing us all how the games tie together
