Should I buy a x34 now or wait till Q4?

Discussion

I've seen lots people saying something should be coming out Q4? What's coming out? Atm, I'm split between the x34 and a VR headset(Oculus is on sale for 350$! too). I wouldn't mind waiting if the wait is worth it.

I'm personally waiting for the new monitors to see how they turn out. It's still a while so it's giving me time to save some money seeing as though they will be hella pricey

Also depends on what type of panel you prefer. VA or IPS. The new PG35VQ and the X35 are both VA. The X34 is IPS.

Coming from someone with both an UW and a Vive, you will absolutely spend more time using your "2D" monitor in comparison to a VR headset... BUT! the experience of VR is not one to be missed. VR gives you a whole new way to play games unlike anything else. I've had so much fun with my Vive in the past year, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for it. Just be aware that the games should not be compared to normal "2D" games (i.e don't expect Witcher 3 VR). I highly recommend you at least give it a try (lots of places demo VR) before making your final decision.

Now that the price of the Rift is down to $350, I would say it's not as important to demo before buying. Back when both sets were $800 definitely demo it before buying. Now it's about the price of a console for a Rift and I wouldn't go tell people to demo a console to see if they want to buy it.

I slightly agree, but since VR is a different experience than "just another console" I can't agree 100% (for the record, I never demoed a Vive or any VR prior to me purchasing it last year). 99% of people who try VR love it immensely, but there are still a percentage of people who are disappointed when they find out they can't play Call of Duty in VR. Go into VR with the right mind, and 350$ is a STEAL!

Oh yeah. I'm definitely getting a VR headset no matter what. It's just a question of what to get first.

I'd say that depends on the quality of your current monitor. If your monitor could use a good upgrade, get a new monitor. If your monitor is pretty good already, go for VR.

Get either of the 2 you mentioned now and the other one when you can afford to. They are both good purchases. I have an x34 and a Vive (essentially the same as the Rift) and I love them both. If you have a subpar monitor right now, maybe go for the x34. If you have a good monitor right now, maybe go for the rift.

Yeah, after reading all the comments ill be getting an x34 first. Currently have a 1440x900 monitor that's about 8ish years old now. Time to move on.

hmm m, I got a x34....but after getting the Rift @399...hasn't seem much use in the last 3 months. I would say get a rift while the sale still on. Get a refurb x34 if you can ;)

Ultrawide is a neat upgrade to your current experience.

VR is a whole new experience.

So would you prefer neat upgrade or something genuinely novel?

Personally, I have a hard time getting excited over monitors after using my Vive for the past few months. It's difficult to immerse yourself in any 2D monitor after owning VR.

At least for me. YMMV

I'm in the same boat as you. Honestly, I would choose the x34 whether you wait or not. Its an incredible monitor, and its going to be relevant for a long ass time. Buy it now and you get a great experience. Wait, and you get it for a cheaper price (hopefully).

I'm on the exact same boat as you. Either x34 or VR... Let me know what you decide to do.

what's coming in q4

Depends on your wallet. The new pg35vq will cost ALOT. Not to mention you would need 2x 1080 ti to power it. People forget what the actual cost of your other parts will be in order to run things at even 100+ fps in demanding games

0
Mintykanesh•

You do not need to run the games at 200fps... 200hz is simply the maximum refresh rate the monitor can achieve.

3
sinddk•

Yeah but what is the point if you are not ever gonna reach it?

holofonze•

Well if he was planning on using the monitor for over 5 years +, eventual graphics cards upgrades will be able to push the frames higher. It's called future proofing...

1
Mintykanesh•

There's that. There's also the fact that I'm not interested in the new Ultrawides purely because they are 200hz. Honestly I'd be perfectly happy if they were 100hz. But the FALD backlight and hopefully improved image quality and quality control are also important.

1
sinddk•

No not really. Take a look at demanding games. 1080ti can't even do max fps on 1080p let alone even 2560x1440. So how will you do 200+ on even higher resoultion.

My point being 200hz is Def. Nice and awesome but when you do some research you will see it's hard as shit to get it up to that level in 3440x1440 especially when games require more and more GPU power. Just as they always have and always will.

I was just about to ask why is a 35in going to be so expensive when compared to say the 34 Predator. Then I did a quick google search and saw HDR and 200hz. Is it really going to have HDR, I haven't experienced HDR personally but I hear it's what you want when getting high grade monitors or 4k tv's.

1
Malgidus•

HDR has several implementations, so that remains to be seen for this particular monitor.

But, the difference between non-HDR and HDR is just as significant as the resolution jump, IMO.

it also has quantum dot so blacks with be a bit better and 512led backlight
