WR Leak

Spoiler

Forgive my ignorance as I've little exposure to this. But it's not clear to me whether WR is supposed to be living in a man's body or the Minister is living in a woman's body.

Watch her leak on the head stone. See how the camera draws attention to her target, it's pretty high up. Think about whether this is possible and how she could hit a target so high directly behind her with male anatomy. I think of the Minister's conversation with Dom. "Imagine the other lives and realities that we are living out at this very moment, the other people we have become".

I suggest that WR and the Minister really are living out alternate realities that may be in parallel and possibly intersect. I would not be surprised if what we are viewing are indeed distinct characters as a result.

I think it's just the standard cross dressers tuck. With regards to WR I'd say she's probably trans living in a country and world that wouldn't accept her as she wants to be.

Yup. WR is "wearing a mask," like everyone else. It's just that WR's mask is a bit more obvious than Elliot's, or Darlene's, or . . .

Seems like that would need to be a pretty long tuck.

Anyone willing to experiment?

I highly doubt WR is trans. I think he's just a crossdresser. Because he's clearly comfortable as a man in a suit. He's just very committed to being a cross dresser. And just for clarification, it's a man's body. The actor is a man (BD Wong), known for serious cross dressing roles.

Oh my gosh I definitely wasn't suggesting that the actor wasn't male. Most of us have been intimate with the show since pilot so we're familiar enough to know BD Wong. I don't think the actor actually took a leak on the headstone, so we're just talking about what we saw, what Esmail wanted us to see, what the character did.

My bad. I must've read your comment wrong. Yeah, I think it just symbolized that WR fully commits to being a crossdresser (it's a mask of sorts, not an alter ego but also not Zhang).

u/samesmail has been very efficient in his use of structures, it would be difficult to accept that WR's gender/lifestyle/preference is incidental. Her character is critical. "Yea, let's just make this critical character trans (or crossdress)". I don't think so, not on this show, there's a reason for everything. Understand her and you may solve the puzzle, understand her actions and "incidentals" and you will understand her and on your way to solving the puzzle. They could have had her leak anywhere on the grave or stone.

I'm sure it is not incidental. Traditionally, and unfortunately, women have not had anywhere where near the same rights/privileges as males in China. A lot of the strides toward gender equality in China only happened in the latter half of the 20th century. Whether WR was born with female genitalia or not (and I can't remember if Sam Esmail or BD Wong said that she is a trans woman dressing as a man or if she was born female), she identifies as a woman, that is something that the show made clear, as well as things that both Sam Esmail and BD Wong have said in interviews. As a woman, it is, again unfortunately, highly unlikely that WR would have been able to accomplish all that she did, and have gotten to the high level she is on, simply because of her gender. So whether she is cross-dressing as a man to fulfill her Zhang role and have access to those resources, or she was born with male genitals and had surgery, it is likely that WR would have to use a male cover to achieve her goals in her country.

But, since this is Mr. Robot, there are more possibilities within this scenario:

  1. The Zhang/WR division provides a cover story, a mask, as mentioned elsewhere on this post, and
  2. Zhang and WR may also be two distinct identities/personalities within the same body.

I tend to think that #2 is less likely, but certainly can't rule it out on this show where DID is a key component of the story.

Of course, there could be a third option which would be even further out there, and that would be that there are two (2) separate ENTITIES (NOT identities, but fully-formed individuals who are totally separate beings from each other) living within the same body and sharing it. Such a second entity could be a spirit/ghost, or a deliberate uploaded/transferred (uploaded consciousness type of thing) presence, be it a person that WR knew or was related to, or something not of this world. Yes, way less likely, and it is out there. But Team Mr. Robot's activities at the SDCC seemed to go out of their way to encourage that type of speculation, so who knows? :-)

I will say that if there was supposed to male genitalia present in that shot/scenario, to hit that gravestone at that angle, the anatomy in question would have likely been a longer hanging model (a shower NOT a grower) plus one very skillful tuck! :-)
