Will our club ever be in a position where it can keep hold of its most valuable players?

Suarez

Torres

Alonso

Masherano

Sterling

Even going back to Owen.

Now Phil, its going to continue to happen.

I quite like FSG as our owners but every season it feels like shit seems to go wrong for them and us.

I'm starting to think the only way we keep our best players is if we have a Shiekh or an Oligarch owning us - ie/ a bottomless pit of money. That way we can sign the worlds best and keep the worlds best.

Will fans ever understand that players become cunts and backstab their team? This isn't really FSGs fault. Coutinho told them 8 weeks ago he's staying

You dont see City, United, Chelsea losing their best players, with the exception of Ronaldo.

Probably because they recruit top class players.

Chelsea literally are about to lose Costa

28
jurgenklopp4kopp•

Because the manager doesn't want him.

16
JokerX29•

He wanted to keep Matic

17
LFCYNWA99•

Yes because Costa wanted to move to China in January

7
TheodoreLesley•

The manager doesn't want him because he's been unsettled because he wanted to leave

2

Eh he always wanted to go back to atletico or china

2
podpool3OP•

He was told by Conte he wasnt needed

1
LFCYNWA99•

Yeah after he said he wanted a move to China

Well you don't really lose what you don't want

Did you not read the part where I said 'I'm starting to think the only way we keep our best players is if we have a Shiekh or an Oligarch owning us - ie/ a bottomless pit of money. That way we can sign the worlds best and keep the worlds best.'

Guarantee you Jesus will go. Pogba and bailly will too, same with hazard and de bruyne

$$$$$$

podpool3OP•

Thats my point mate, I'm beginning to think we need owners that are arabs or fucking russians

2
Fartscissors•

We were the best team in the world and Keegan wanted to leave. Don't put too much stock in the loyalty of players.

No one man is bigger than the club

34
Wonka_train•

Yeah. We can't be putting players on a pedestal. It's a bad idea. If you've been a fan long enough you should know to love the club not the players. Live long enough and they've all left.

2
rick_rolled_you•

Stop buying south Americans who's dream is to play in Spain

25
trasofsunnyvale•

I think this is the issue. We should make sure we bend over backwards to keep our best English talent. The sad bit is that English players aren't usually good enough to carry teams.

2
I_LIKE_SEALS•

But south americans are the best

1
dustyshelves•

Africans are the beat tho.

1
AluminumFalcon3•

If we get bought out by some billionaire and can pay Man City wages

20
JokerX29•

For every Sheikh Mansour there are 100 Hicks & Gillett's.

United was forced to sell Ronaldo despite winning trophies. The two Spanish clubs will always be at least a Tier above every other club.

7
Nickoboosh•

Just in terms of the bullshit theyre willing to do. I lnow weve been pretty dodgy in our dealings this summer, but barca and real are the worst.

3
JOHNNYBAB00N•

I'd rather deal with Real any day. At least they're more willing to just throw money at you until you accept, Barca do every underhanded thing they can possibly think of to turn player's heads and then they lowball you on top of it.

13
Nickoboosh•

Still maintain suarezs chiellini bite was a coincidence. Someone there told him to do it.

4
jurgenklopp4kopp•

Making sure we don't sell to Americans would be a good start. Preferably Arab or Chinese.

-2†
MCMXCVII_Inc•

Probably do need new rich owners tbh. At least then we'd be able to have a squad of class players rather than depending on 2/3 at a time.

7
totalgyro•

It's not all about money.

1
MCMXCVII_Inc•

You're right. Its not all about money but its a big factor. Just look at psg and city. Even spurs who have a great squad and starting to get defectors.

5
totalgyro•

It's going to happen to every team, but I think FSG have a long term plan. It might be a shit plan, but its a plan.

-2
LFC_Slav•

No.

5
Copps•

Honestly i dont think so. Even if we got unlimited funding by oil rich owners we still couldn't be the biggest team, because cities like Barca, Madrid, Paris, London, Milan etc would always be more appealing to players. So if you consider if all teams had unlimited budgets, we would lose out because of that, the city is not as appealing to stars. All these cities are capable of being run by owners with deep pockets, if not now, in the future. It's not like the past days of tee 70s or 80s when we were top anymore, money drives the game, and all of these cities will attract rich ownership to compete with. We already couodnt compete with paris, even if our money was the same.

5
podpool3OP•

Thats a very fair point. Sanchez for example chose London over Liverpool.

Its just a wank situation all around. I'd still we'd fare better at keeping our best players though if we had deeper pockets and the ability to sign the players we want. Other players in the team would likely see the ambition and want to stick around?

5
Copps•

Yeah for sure, kind of like what City are doing now. We could still be amongst the best and attract decent stars if we had deeper pockets, but probably not be the very very best because of the location.

1
frankhebo•

Well written. We most certainly can't compete with clubs in these when the WAG say "no I don't like Liverpool - I will live in BigCity - or you sleep on the couch"

2
frankhebo•

So maybe Liverpool should give the WAG a free helicopter so they can fly to London, Paris in no time??

1
Di_Marzipan•

Yes, when one of those premium players has something called fucking loyalty.

Or Arab money.

4
podpool3OP•

Arab money seems to be the only way man, depressing as fuck.

Its like making a deal with the devil.

3
KnowsIt4ll•

My answer will be 'yes'. But british football has to grow

  • as a household name in the international scene.

The major attraction about british football is not about exposure to european competitions. On the contrary, the local competetiveness of the PL makes it tougher to enter the competitions in comparison to your skill (many players of the mid to lower table teams would walk into most established serial-participants in other countries).

So what is it that players are attracted to in the PL? Its not the atmospheres - what is it then ... its money that 'attracts' the players that 'come here'. If they came for money, they will leave for money without blinking an eye - to lure someone with money and expect loyalty is a kind of harmfull delusion.

Just two things would qualify to change in order to be able to keep your best players: being competitive internationaly -> trophies (british teams have not been overly succesfull in the european competitions).

Or, your best players consider the piece of land where your ground is located their 'home'. Im talking homegrown players. Players that call the region their home, players that do not care about the weather. Wich leads me to...

  • as a place to develope youth.

The influx of money causes the teams to look for a quick fix and first invest in and than ignore their youth prospects (i will name Dom Solanke my example). In general, the youth developement in britain is, compared to other countries miles behind (see at the bottom).

If liverpool can trust and cherish its youth prospects (im talking home grown like TAA). And invest heavily into youth developement (preferably in cooperation with all other stakeholders), there could not only be a situation where players do not neccessary wanna leave - but the youth academies are producing talent non-stop and the club and the fans are confident that raw quality is waiting in the wings, itching for a chance to show what they are made of.

We could be such a haven for youth. A club that does not rely on our 'best players'. The biggest obstacle that i can see for that right now, is the fanbase-meltdown-crew pushed to their bareable limit by the media - gues what the media is in for? You really wanna believe their story?

(About the reforms: )The neccessary reforms would be hugely expensive, of course. Germany invested about 500m€ in the span of 10 years or so in order to revive their youth developement (if you want to see the result, i would recomend the semi final in brazil). Thats roughly 50m€ a year ... to completely reshape the landscape and general approach to youth developement not in one club, but in every single german club that plays professional football + way beyond (recomended reading: Raphael Honigstein - "Das reboot").

Lets see next summer

2
hazzario•

Until Torres I never really worried about it, I can only remember Collymore and Owen breaking my heart in a good ten years and always thought we were on par with the best. Nowadays it just seems we are always on the cusp of being great before losing our icons :(

2
giddy07•

Only local lads to be honest, lads like Carra and Trent were and are just F5ers like us that made it.

2

I would rather keep on trying with klopp, win it the liverpool way.

Not until we have one of the best players in the world where others will want to join and be part of history and can compete for champions league finals and when Barcelona/Real Madrid aren't relevant but that may never happen

1
amachefe•

Like Barca?

Didn't they lose Neymar?

1
podpool3OP•

They're not owned by an Oligarch or a Sheikh with a fuck load of money. Plus its a little different when a 200m release clause is triggered, which was put in to put off potential buyers. Only in this case it didn't work lol.

1
amachefe•

Well, you also have listed Barca too!!

This self pity post is not helping... Liverpool is Liverpool...

1
podpool3OP•

Listed Barca where mate?

1
amachefe•

You shld have listed Barca as teams that need to be big to hold their players

1
Daltesse•

yes and no. If we get back to where we were a decade ago, then we'll be able to rebuff 95% of teams. Right now, we can rebuff about 90% easily. In England, we'd only lose someone to Man City or Chelsea if the player wants money; as no player is stupid enough to swap the red shirts at either end of the M62.

Aboard it's different. The draw of Madrid and Barca is huge and even if we were dominating, we'd still have a hard time keeping a player they want.

1
rydleo•

Ever is a long time, who knows? Short term (say next few years), probably not.

1
Sleepless4life•

Yeah win trophies. And no it isn't just us. Just look at Spurs young talented team but how long before there's an exodus when there's no trophies. Either that or get a billionaire sugar daddy that can pay for anything he wants.
