If we could have a fallout game not in the (now ex) United States, where would you put the next Fallout game?

Discussion

Personally I would love to see Moscow or London.

Probably Scandinavia or Canada, putting "winter" into "nuclear winter".

I would like to see Toronto but Canada doesn't exactly have sprawling metropolis. It would be like skyrim, with burnt out buildings. And a toppled over CN tower. Pearson would be Whicked cool, and imagine the sky dome with vines and a huge tree growing out of center field.

What kind of state is China supposed to be in? That would be a cool and appropriate location.

London.

I realise it would be a departure from the 50s retro US theme but I think a God Save the Queen/Our Finest Hour approach would be really interesting. This has come up before so to quote myself:

I'd love a spin-off or a big DLC here in Blighty. Would be awesome to fly over a bombed London in a vertibird only have air-raid sirens scream and flack bring you down. Crash landing in "Hide Park" you are immediately chased by people on rad-horseback with packs of rad-hounds. Running and hiding you are rescued by a cockney orphan coming up from a concealed manhole.

Within the Underground you meet...the Underground. The remnants of the poor and downtrodden who eek out a life in the tunnels. They tell you of the conflict above between the Lords and the Commons, and of the Lost Queen. Along your way in solving the struggle you'll encounter Old Bailey (a half-mad ghoul who imprisons people in the Tower, watch out for Rad-Ravens!), the Taters (a surrealist raider gang), the Chief Minister (held up with the Common Army in the remains of the Imperial War museum), the Followers of Paul (all called Paul), the Fleet street demon (crazed Mr Handy Barber, complete with white and red jet covering) and many more.

From Towers Crossing to Battersea Nuclear you'll have to keep your wits about you to navigate the ancient city, learn the mystery of the Crown Duels and survive the relentless, persistent, radioactive rain!

I feel like you we're picking out the stereotypical parts of English culture. A post-apocalyptic England would be more of a ruined concrete jungle, gangs of thugs using crude knives and bats (since guns are rare in the U.K) and placing a U.K based Fallout game in London would feel too kind of "oh its jolly old England, lets place it in London governor!". Plymouth would be more fitting, since it has strange locations, you could pass the river to Cornwall, and of course, the Naval Base (which would be where most of the guns in the area would come from).

Only places that wouldn't demolish everything Fallout stands for are Canada and Mexico.

faaltekOP•

How so? Do you think there are no survivors in England or something similar?

7
houseonhillonsea•

We know by Tenpenny that England is still thriving enough to have established capitalist hierarchy. Enough at least for Tenpenny to ride a boat to America.

Autism_BrigadeVault 111•

Yeah, but the American west has something similar with the NCR, so it's not really hard to believe civilization would be starting to reemerge elsewhere on the planet as well.

JozozLord Death of Murder Mountain•

Fallout's core identity is based on retrofuturistic Americana.

I'm all for good change but if that goes away it's just no longer Fallout.

It'd be like if you made an Elder Scrolls game on Mars.

FO1 and FO2 never had that 50's vibe, that was something Bethesda added in themselves. It can be removed in needed.

2
JozozLord Death of Murder Mountain•

Of course they did. Just look at the intro to Fallout 1.

Bethesda overemphazied it but they didn't invent it. The whole blasting super mutants while listening to 40's music was something Beth invented.

Not really though. Plenty of weird and exotic locations in the Elder Scrolls universe. Make it a spin off. How about the cancelled fallout games about a US Army unit having to travel back from China to the US right after the bombs fell ? I know it can't really be an open world, but I'd love an adventure games set in the Fallout universe where you'd travel through various locations.

1
JozozLord Death of Murder Mountain•

Again you misunderstand Fallout. A game like that right after the bombs fell miss the mark of the point of Fallout.

The point of Fallout is that even with a clean slate history repeats itself. A big theme is a warped misunderstanding of the past which influences everyone's actions. That's why it's also a crime against Fallout that we saw the pre-war world in FO4.

Elder Scrolls: John Carter?

I'd buy the shit out of that

I think they may be referring to the fact that anywhere that isn't North America wouldn't be as damaged, there would be no power armor, no super mutants and little to no vaults.

Toronto.

Even though in the Fallout world, that technically is the US...

It'd be interesting to see how other places in the world are faring 200 years post-war, but keeping the vibe and theme consistent is challenging.

The easy places would be Mexico or Canada, and maybe Hawaii. Alaska especially, since Operation Anchorage was such a huge deal, and you could show a greater Chinese influence up there since they launched an invasion there. Across the board with these places, it'd be easy to give Vault-tech some good exposure and maintain the retro-futuristic 1950's theme.

The harder places to tackle would be China and the U.K. China would be neat, as maybe we can show a company like vault-tech, and the different technology such as the stealth suits and knock-off power-armor they had in development. Regardless, it would be such a different kind of game that it wouldn't feel like Fallout. On top of it all, if Mothership Zeta is considered canon, then we can note that China glows green and likely got hit a hell of a lot harder than the U.S. did during the war.

Fallout IS the culture of 50's US.

Any other setting, while having the potential to be a great game, wouldn't be fallout.

Would totally want Newcastle Upon Tyne to make an appearance. whisperswantmesomeangelofthenorth22xxeditionwhispers

St. James' Park (football stadium) and Science Central (Newcastle University's Sci. and Eng. department) combining together to form something like what Diamond City and The Institute would appear amalgamated.

The nearby Chinatown (established somewhere around late 1940s) could be a base location for a Chinese faction (descendants of immigrants and sleeper agents).

The area around the River Tyne would be really awesome to explore including the bridges along the River Tyne. I'd imagine a quest where the player character has to bring back the Millennium Bridge back into working order enabling to open and close once again.

Eldon Square and the immediate area around it would be a fun place for several factions to fight over. Would be funny to see raiders be called chavs or chavvers.

Possible replacement for supermutants can be the successful attempts by the MoD down in Porton Down to replicate the fictional chemical from Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The chemical in question would be called the Jekyll-Hyde formula (JHF) and the mutants Hydes? I am imagining Hydes like this before and after. There could be several variants:

  • Variant 1 - Specimen that transforms into Hyde via a "JHF stimpak" injection.
  • Variant 2 - Feral Ghoul specimen exposed to JHF resulting in permanent Jekyll transformation. Post transformation specimen is noted to have increased aggression and decreased sapience compared to specimen pre-exposure.
  • Variant 3 - Specimen exposed to JHF and intense radiation resulting in permanent transformation. Transformed specimen demonstrates luminescence and self termination upon sufficient provocation.
  • Variant 4 - Specimens from the earliest exposures to JHF and over time gained the J/H shifting ability without requiring injection of JHF.
  • Variant 5 - Specimen exposed to a long term high dosage JHF via submersion in JHF vat resulting in a significant increase in mass and aggression. Picture

Alas, even if the next Fallout were to be set in the UK it would probably be London, Glasgow or Edinburgh due to them being far more prominent world wide. In my ideal world Newcastle would at best be a DLC otherwise it will not make an appearance at all.

In terms of a game that actually feels like Fallout, with the 50s retro-futurism. my top pics.

  1. Canada, Shared and intertwine culture and it WAS a part of the US in Fallout so US tech and vaults being there is lore. Toronto would be my pick of city, as we already heard of Ronto in the lore.

  2. UK, close enough to the 50 retro future-ism vibe, hell they even had rock and roll music and culture over there (which they return the favor in the 60s with the British Invasion). London is very much the "Iconic English city" so it would be the starting place.

  3. Republic of Ireland, like the ones above, share culture and all, Dublin would be my pick. Plus i have a thing for the Irish accent ;)

another option that i wouldn't mind seeing, Mexicali (with Calexico) for a NCR story that exploring the Mexico wasteland, would keep several Fallout elements while exploring something new. Tho i still would prefer Obsidian to be the ones writing for the NCR.

2
Bobster66•

The whole Ronto thing always makes me laugh. It's an obvious and weak attempt by non locals to create an interesting future name for the city. It should be Trawna, because it already is.

I know it would never happen, but I'd like to a Fallout story set somewhere in Central Africa. I think it would be cool to see mutated versions of all of the wildlife native to that region, as well as the politics of what would happen to a third-world area after the war.

Scotland. Either the urban areas of Lanark, or around the Ochils

I'd love to see a game about post-apocalyptic China made in partnership with a Chinese studio, since they were the main pre-war antagonist. But last time this was posted (to be fair, OP, it gets posted almost daily) I did some digging and realized that "alternative timeline" games are all banned in China, so no luck.

But, I'd love to see some sort of deal like Beth had with Obsidian of having local devs create high quality canon Fallout titles that take place in their own backyard. Like a Canadian Fallout title by Bethesda would be nice, but a Canadian Fallout title by BioWare would be fucking rad.

And past that, I don't really care where it takes place-- it would be really nice to see some creative, high quality Fallout titles that don't rely on Fallout 1 cliches (leave the vault, find a MacGuffin, fight a shadowy technologically superior organization, kill supermutants and ghouls and explore vaults).

What do, say, Mexicans think a post-apocalyptic Guadalajara would look like in the Fallout universe? I'd love to find out.

Definitely China, because they were the enemy of the U.S before the Great War and they should have probably been hit as hard or even worse than the U.S. They are also probably the 2nd most diverse country geographically (the 1st being the U.S) so we could get deserts, jungles, mountains, plains, etc, along with many forms of exotic wildlife plus we could also branch out into Mongolia, Nepal, Central Asia and even Korea. Also I think China would be great for factions, we could have like a Communist vs Capitalist civil war going on, we could also have real Mongols (instead of the Great Khans). That is just the tip of the spear there could be so many more fucking awesome ideas the community could think about for China so I got my fingers crossed.

Vandrin•

I know this is in the U.S. but it's pretty much in Canada so I think Alaska would be a cool place to have a game. It could almost be like Skyrim in terms of atmosphere but more open and lonely feeling
