[Theory] The problem with NFL attendance isnt the fans, its the price of the ticket
say chad and brad, brothers, go to the game to support their team the new york jets with their wives carly and jenny and their close friends zack and x.
brad has a suburban, so they can all fit.
lets estimate the costs
#Lower Bowl seats:
~250 ea. * 6 = $1500
so right out the gate, brad and chad are forking over 500 bucks. they spend a fifth of that on redzone, but since theyre die hard jets fans, they dont mind... if you had a family, youd have to seriously decide whether or not to go on a family vacation or go to a football game
#Parking
$40 per auto
not so bad, split 4 ways is $10 each (zack and x pay seperately) a full tank of gas is $60 on a really good day though.
#Memorabilia
Jenny and Carly want a cap
$40 ea. $80. because nothing says "i love you" quite like a jets hat.
#Drinks between $24 and $120
Jenny and Carly want to forget theyre at a jets game. so do brad and chad. zack and x agree to pay for everyones drinks.
their choices are
-
a small glass of whisky flavored ice or any other hard: $20
-
average price of beer: $10 ($12 for nice beer 8 for normal)
-
a bottle of water: $4
-
a gallon of coke: $12
#The hassle
would you go through all this trouble and expense for a fucking jets game?
#tldr:
Tickets: $1500
Parking: $40
Hats: $80
Drink and Food: $200 per quarter
Winning against the Titans in a two score game: Priceless?
See my point? I mean, i understand owners are making the most money with TV contracts, so why don't they shave off the price of admission. I'm sure there is a correlation between attendance and prices. and I'm sure there is an imbalance at a lot of venues (not just NFL). We could use some hooligans in the building from time to time.
Disclaimer: this is based on my experience at sporting events. you'll find sites with different averages, however they are outdated and i believe this is closer to the real issue. having said that, the point im trying to get across is not lost.
