Help planning diet for son with Wilms
Hi all. Our lives were recently turned upside down with the news that our 11mth old son had a Wilms tumor. 1 radical nephrectomy and a stage 2 FH diagnosis later, we are getting started with chemo tomorrow, Tuesday the 15th. Vincristine and dactinomycin in a 22 week total plan.
I have read many of the abstracts/discussion/conclusions in the papers that show up on google scholar regarding vincristine, actinomycin d, and wilms. The treatment is well established and works so well that therapy reduction has been being studied heavily for a while now, so I am good with all of this.
I am trying to figure out what I can do to help the situation, and while there is very little in my control here, I am now thinking about his diet. A major point of this discussion is antioxidants. We meet with the doctor again tomorrow, and I would like to have an opinion and be relatively knowledgeable when we meet regarding diet options and what the latest research says. HOWEVER, I seem to be unable to access some of the articles. Here are a few examples of articles I would like to use:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23680455 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25078786 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24287781 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19249331
Here is what I think I understand so far, not 100% sure obviously: From my reading, it seems the antioxidants can do both harm and good during chemotherapy, and that the current research has not determined a final answer as to whether it is worth doing.
So is the best answer science can give me today is to just eat an normal diet? What is this "normal" diet? Him being 11m old, he gets quite a few foods that are high in antioxidants anyway. Should I avoid?
Looking for answers, repping_life
