How would distribution of products work in Communism

In communism, I know that the means of production are owned by the workers, but how would distribution work? In a post-scarcity society, I know you could order something and get it shipped to your doorstep, but in today's society that isn't feasible. So does the government own every store, or is it that people can set up stores, and proceeds are redistributed?
