High Gain pedal users: Do you use a Noise Gate?

I rehearsed with my new band for the first time last night. I've been playing at bedroom levels until now and haven't had any issues with this fuzz I was using (home built Devi Ever Hyperion 2) but at full band practice volume as soon as I turn the pedal on it's "BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!" coming out of my amp. Would a noise gate like a cheap NS-2 before the drive pedals help with this, or should I try just turning down the gainz first?
