Are high grades worth it?

I am currently studying in the Netherlands. Here colleges and universities don't include your GPA or average grade on your diploma. Unless you average an 8.0, your diploma will look just like the diploma of someone who had 6.0s across the board. It's like grades don't matter, as long as they're not a failing grade. Should I still go for a high GPA or average grade?
