A theory of Generation Y and the rise of leftism in America.
Generation Y (Millennials/Echo Boomers) are regarded as a very left wing generation and responsible for current strains in America. Ever since I started taking psychology courses I've wanted answer the question: Why Generation Y? Why isn't a rise of leftism been apparent in any other generation before? A simple answer came to my mind came to me when I started learning about Erik Erikson's 8 stages of childhood development. The answer is:
The Baby Boomer Generation.
The parents to most of Generation Y (Baby Boomers) were the generation to fail when it came to Generation Y's development. Erikson's 4th and 5th stages are crucial to the rest of your life and the Baby Boomers slipped up when it came to this.
The Baby Boomers expected too much from Generation Y, not allowing the generation to express themselves and any other teenage group. This caused the 4th stage of development to become lax and Generation Y lost interest and motivation to do what every other American Generation wanted to do: succeed. Instead, most of Generation Y became lazy and unmotivated. The Generation wanting things such as socialism/communism as a real solution, instead of wanting to climb the ladder of capitalism.
The 5th stage deals with identity and how you see yourself in the world. Instead of being supportive and the younger Generation understanding later that their elders where correct, Generation Y received demotivation and tormented words from their parents. This lead to Generation Y wanting to be different from the rest by any means necessary (sound familiar?).
This explains the rise of socialism, communism, riots, self-hatred, and the want to accept outsiders in America. Once we stop being very hateful towards them and stop attacking them at every chance we get, they can exit the 5th stage and lead on normal lives.
TL;DR
Generation Y is failing because of the actions of their parents.
