do you need to leave gaps between the wraps when building SS/Ni coils?

Titles says it all: I've switched over to Ni (or maybe SS) from kanthal and need to start rebuilding my RBAs. I've gone to Steam Engine and did the maths, but in my searches of this sub on Ni coils, I've seen fleeting references made towards leaving gaps between each wrap, but nothing saying "yes, leave X amount of space between the wraps, for [some reason]."
