How can I make the burn of nostalgia go away?
This is a half serious question.
Last year, about this time, I discovered Old School Runescape. Note that I am a player of 10 years, started when I was 6. I have never been a member until A Friend gave me a bond this year (sadly, not caught the YT video he posted). Go ahead and laugh, but I couldn't afford it.
Last year, I logged into my old account, Blackfox_77 (which is now banned). When I created my character, pressed Ok, that's when the music started playing. Newbie Melody.
Dear God, that gave me a rush into the past. I sat there for a good 5 minutes, staring at my screen. Crying. Tears streamed down my face as I remembered the amazing childhood I had. Even if I was only f2p. It was... a dream come true. A dream I had never had. Why? Because I didn't realize how much the game had changed, how different it was. I was, after all, only 6.
I didn't realize that rs3 had turned into such a disaster. I never realized that RuneScape back in 2007 was the stuff. And then, with the release of RS3, the community died. I didn't realize that, as I was oblivious to the whole situation. I just thought the game was losing popularity.
And then, I played through the tutorial. I took a good half hour, taking in all of the glorious nostalgia. It burned. The thing about nostalgia is that it burns.
That's when I got to Lumbridge. The music. Again. Harmony. It brought me back even further. Me, 7 year old me, exploring. Having fun. I didn't care that I was f2p, I didn't care that I hadn't even made a 99. I was playing to have fun, and as much fun as I could have. Now... Now? I can't go back. All the veterans who played when I did are in the race to the top, not here to have fun. Just pissed that they couldn't have their old character back. Every other player is a salty potato who don't do anything but call me a loser for trying to have fun, not trying to be the best.
I played OSRS for hours a day, feeling sad because now that I was a mature person, I didn't remember what fun I had back when I was younger. The fun in exploring, in selling things to the General Store, in calling a random building in Falador my home, in fighting scorpions in the mines, in running around in the wilderness, in exploring Karamja. And that was sad. Nostalgia burns like fire, you know.
But what about today? When I'm not playing OSRS, I feel a burn of nostalgia, wishing I could go back. When I am, I feel sadness, because it isn't the same. A good portion of my YouTube history consists of old school music and YouTubers. Because I want to go back.
I still feel the nostalgia burning inside me every single day. Don't you dare call it obsession, because it isn't. I know casual players who play more than me. I hear fellow veterans cry out all the time about being sad because they want to go back, so I'm not alone. I'm no freak of nature. I know we can't make this go away. Our choices are to suck it up and continue doing what we love, or to just abandon OSRS altogether, and never touch RuneScape again. Personally, I will take the pain any time. Because this is one of the few things of my personal life in reality that makes me happy. I know a lot of other people who will do the same. But why is this nostalgia a problem? The community is too toxic. I don't care about the bots. I'm not talking about the memes. Did you read what I just typed? Nobody cares and everybody hates you for trying to just have fun.
tl;dr This is my RuneScape testimony. I played for 10 years, since I was 6. Now I'm 16 and experiencing the burn of nostalgia.
