Broke up because of my depression. Am recovering well, should I reach out?
I started seeing him in January. We had a great relationship- I've been in many relationships, long-term and short-term alike, and I can safely say i have never felt so safe, so protected, so carefree & being with him was so easy. He says that he felt the same.
Things started to change when I was rushed to hospital for a bacteria infection. We realised we loved each other then- and then he asked me to be his girlfriend a few weeks later.
However, after we got together, I started spiralling into depression. The infection had caused the depression, and I had severe mood swings. Furthered by other factors in my life, things got worse and worse.
For a few days I would cry for no reason, simply from the pain, and it was hurting our relationship. Then once it was over, I was okay again, for the next week or so. He was very stressed out as this kept on going for a few months. He began to slowly become more violent as he was more stressed- he punched the wall, broke his table at a point where I had a bad meltdown. He convinced me to go for therapy, and accompanied me to my appointments.
My family was particularly unkind at that point in time, and my mother even said things about asking me to die, and how I should be thankful I had a roof over my head & food in my bowl. They were very aggressive, and my father even started to act like I was invisible- he stopped talking to me entirely. My friends were beginning to isolate me, and I felt an immense amount of loneliness. This was when I began to spin completely out of control. I would stare at the window for hours, I began planning my suicide. At one point, I left home to stay with him for a night (my family is super conservative and I'm sure they would have thrown me out) and I felt better. His presence made everything better.
But the very next day I was left alone for too long, and he was away. I didn't want to burden him, so I called a close friend of mine, and was crying and screaming & shouting into the telephone. My mother had sent messages threatening to disown me, and how she was disappointed that she had such a weak daughter like me, and various messages that caused me such pain. He came back, and realised I had broken down, and had a good talk with my parents. After that, he broke down.
For days he would not talk to me, saying he was emotionally numb. I missed him, so much. I don't blame him for wanting to leave me. I got really drunk one night and had half a bottle of whiskey (I can't really drink, to be honest) and after that he broke up with me, saying that he was losing himself in the relationship. He was tired of constantly worrying about when my next break down would be. He was no longer himself.
The break up was the kick in the ass for me to get my life back together. For two weeks since then I have not allowed myself to feel low- I worked out, I read, i practiced mindfulness, i did yoga; everything I could do to get better.
In the meantime, my relationship with my parents has gotten a lot better as they have become a lot less abusive. I am recovering very well with the company of my friends as well.
I really miss him and the only dealbreaker in our relationship was my depression. Now that I'm slowly learning to overcome it, and I feel that I'm almost there- I want him back in my life. But i'm not sure whether I should give him space.. I miss him and love him so much. What should I do? Should I reach out to him?
