is this experience common to anyone else?

Content warning: Self-harm, suicidal thoughts

I've been in therapy for about eight months now and a month ago my therapist recommended I read a book about codependency and ACOA. Everything started to make sense and fall into place and I've been processing a lot, understanding that I am an adult child of an alcoholic. I think I wasn't ready to hear that I was an ACOA until recently and it's been kind of a shock, but it's something my therapist has been leading up to for awhile and I'm glad that I finally know, because it feels like a breakthrough.

So at first I was quite relieved to have words and precedent put to my experiences and the way I view the world, because I always feel so different and disconnected from others. But I'm suddenly finding myself struggling more with mental health than I have in quite a long time.

Like to the extent of suddenly having suicidal thoughts and being kind of scared of myself and wanting to self-harm again (which is something I struggled with a lot when I was younger, but generally keep under control). And I've been going through waves of alternating feeling - sometimes I just feel completely numb and dissociated from my emotions, and other times they're so strong I feel completely overwhelmed and struggle not to just collapse into panic attacks.

Is this something like it gets worse before it gets better? Has anyone else experienced like a mental-health relapse after learning about ACOA? Also, at around the same time, I finally went no-contact with my parents, so that might have something to do with it as well.

I'm tired of feeling so strange and shattered inside.
