Crash course on RGB strips and fans

My cousin's building his first PC and wants my help. I've never put RGB in any of my PCs and he wants it in his, and I have no idea how it works. I bought a pretty cheap rgb strip kit and it came with a controller. If I buy RGB fans, would those need their own controllers or can they be controlled by this controller?
