New Chiari Diagnosis
Hi all, I think I'm just looking for some support. It's nice to know there are others like me out there!
I started having intense head pressure and pain following sneezing and laughing in October 2007, I was 18. The MRI report said everything was normal. I was not referred to a neurologist as my pcp ordered the test. She told me it was likely stress due to life changes (including starting college.)
Fast forward 7.5 years and 2 college degrees later. I brought up these "headaches" to a new doctor and they were immediately dismissed. She told me to take some Advil when it happens. Symptoms since then have progressed to the point where sometimes simply moving my neck causes the pressure/pain in my head. They have been so intense that I lose my hearing while it lasts. Luckily, the pressure subsides after about 20 seconds. Within the past few months the following have been causing the same pain: coughing, yawning, exercise, stretching, rolling over in bed. I've woken up gasping for breath with this pain. My left hand has been numb and tingly intermittently for about a week.
Another new pcp this year referred me to a neurologist and she requested an MRI, MRA, and MRV. MRI shows a 25mm herniation. The report was sent to my neurologist 3 days ago, but the office has not called me yet. I have a scheduled appointment in one month for a follow up, but I would assume she would have me come in sooner since the MRI wasn't normal. (The finalized results are posted to my patient portal 3 days after they're completed, which is how I know what they are.)
Should I wait for the neurologist to call me, or should I call her to get in sooner to discuss the results? The report also states the foremen magnum is crowded. With my worsening symptoms and a pretty large herniation, I assume surgery is the only option. Has anyone seen any relief or good changes in symptoms without surgery?
Thanks!
