How to sell my ether?

I am a bit short on money so I need to sell my ether. Thing is I'm a bit confused with the process. online stuff suggest that I should first convert my eth to btc and then btc to usd. I get the first part but how do I convert btc to usd in safe way? Paypal? Also since I'm in India I need to get my money in INR rather than USD. How do I do that? And lastly how safe is this procedure? I don't wanna loose my eth.
