New to this, wanted to share my story!
I've recently started my minimalism journey. I saw the video posted on Buzzfeed and found the overall concept was intriguing. I'd been feeling super overwhelmed by all of my stuff crammed into my small room (I'm living at home until I graduate, but pay rent and basically everything else, it's just really conveniently located). I barely had room to walk around (let alone work out or do anything else besides sleep), full closet and bins under my bed as well.
So I made a promise. I'd been wanting a more functional desk/workstation. Found an Ikea one I loved on Craigslist for less than half of retail in perfect condition and figured it was a sign from the universe. Moving that in, I got rid of my entire "entertainment unit" that basically held junk/my TV and the non functional desk that I hated. Immediately I felt like this huge weight had been lifted off of me and kept going.
4 hours later, I had: 3 trash bags going to the collection center, 1 big box going to Goodwill, and a bag of clothes going to my local consignment that I probably hadn't worn in over a year.
Funny observations:
-
The more I got rid of the better I felt and clearer I was able to think if that makes sense.
-
The entire time my grandmother kept trying to convince me to keep everything on the grounds of "you might need/wear that!!" To which I'd usually reply "I haven't worn it in over a year..." or "when was the last time I actually went on or had time to go on a date? (in response to "you could wear that on a date!")

I've literally never been happier with how my room looks. I hung up my degree next to my desk (motivation to keep going) and found two photography shots of my horses that I'd forgotten I even had (blank wall space next to my window was perfect for these). The only thing I want to add is a little art piece that's more "me" for the other side of my desk. Getting rid of so much had made me have a deeper appreciation for the things that make me happy.
Now my goal is to do a little bit every weekend. I still have some parts of my closet, underneath my bed, and my hair/make up products to go through, but little by slowly it's getting done. I'd love to get to the point where I don't have anything that I'm not actively using or will be using in the near future.
Sorry that was kind of long, but my family doesn't understand why I'm doing this and I really needed to share with people who don't think I'm crazy! :)
