Kind of a weird question, but what would be an appropriate sympahy cake?

One of my very close friend's dog passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this morning so I wanted to bake a cake for him and his wife (hoping that will somewhat lift their spirits in such a terrible situation).

After seeing the beautiful Victoria Sponge on the front page my first thought went there, but that may just be recency bias.

What are your thoughts?
