Did I manage to get a virus on my Mac?

I downloaded a video last night (rhymes with frame of drones) and everything was fine until like 3/4 of the way through the file VLC player starts shitting the bed and freezing every couple minutes.

This sort of caused Safari to lag a bit. Trying to pinpoint the problem (was it VLC or the potentially hazardous file) I ended up downloading IINA player and it stopped pausing, so I thought everything was fine.

I finished the episode but safari was still laggy, most notably the typing. When typing on Reddit itll kind of freeze up every few words and to be blunt it's really fucking annoying.

I cleared my cache/history, closed all applications then shut off my MacBook for the night. I woke up this morning and it's doing the same stuff - a bit laggy with horrendous lag when I type and pages are taking a bit longer to load than usual and I'll get that dreaded pinwheel.

I ran malwarebytes but it said my system was clean, but something is clearly not right here. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
