Can you travel to Spain on an Irish Passport close to the expiry date?

So, my mother is supposed to fly to Benidorm this weekend for a few days but she's just realized that her passport is out of date in November and that you can only fly within 6 months of the expiry date.

I've read that once the passport is still in date by her return date she'll be okay but I'm not sure how true this is. She's thinking of renewing her passport and driving to the passport office if she can to pick it up to have it in time for Sunday.

I've been on to the passport website and all it's telling me is a renewal will take 5-6 weeks and emergency passports can only be given in the case of illness or death. Does anyone on here have any idea if there's anything else she can do or if she can travel once it's still in date by her return date next week?
