Civil Marriage before Temple Marriage Allowed?

I am not having any luck finding an answer to my question, even my bishop was not sure. Long story short, my fiance and I have a temple sealing appointment in October. We are wondering, is it ok to do a civil marriage before the temple marriage? I know that normally there is a 1 year waiting period, but I swear I heard or read somewhere that you can get married civilly as long as you are sealed within 30 days. Is this true? The reason why we want to move the civil marriage up is because my fiance is in the USA with me on a K1 visa, and we want to get the ball rolling for her residency as soon as possible. As for the October date, we want her family to be able to participate in the Temple ceremony and they won't be able to come until then.
