Starting whit home automation

So, at this time I already read a lot, but still have some questions: i have an Apple tv4 so if I buy accessories that says HomeKit compatible I don't need no hub?? if I buy a Philips hue starter kit and connect to apple tv4 then I can by lamps that are compatible with Phillips and keep adding? sorry if I don't make my self clear.
