My girlfriends roommate is abandoning their lease [TX]
Firstly, thank you to anyone taking time to read this and help. It is greatly appreciated.
On to the situation:
My girlfriends roommate has decided to up and leave. They both signed a single lease agreement. The lease, like many, does not stipulate how rent should be divided up between them. This effectively puts all of the financial burden on my girlfriend, which she can not afford.
She has no other options but to move back home, and that's it. The leasing office showed no signs of wanting to work with us, they're all business. The lease does not have a clause allowing her to terminate early. She can't get her name removed from the lease without her roommates consent. I honestly believe, as far as my non-informed legal viewpoint is concerned, that her hands are entirely tied.
So my question is: what can she do now to reduce the impact / mitigate some of the legal and financial repercussions that she will accrue?
Also, would a legal consultation with someone locally be worth it? Maybe a lawyer could help break the lease somehow?
I'm beyond worried for her. We've both been quite nervous, especially because we were going to get our own place together once her lease ended. Quite a setback. Thank you for your time and consideration.
