Which would you pick?
This has been bugging me for a while, and I'm not sure how/what school is right for me. So here it goes.
I want to ultimately go into medicine, and for that I need to get into medical school. So, I need to find colleges that I can get into that are fairly good but I can handle. My SAT is 1420/1600, and I have an average Unweighted GPA of 3.85 at a very high ranking prep school. However the real ordeal is that I am an athlete. I am a football player, specifically a kicker, for a high rank team. We won the STATE title last year. I have the state championship ring in my room right now. However, I don't enjoy it too much. My team needed a kicker, so I volunteered, and it is NOT a fun job. Whether I play football or not I could care less.
I was in love with Lehigh for the longest time. Although it is not entirely focused on medicine, it is a science oriented school with a considerably large biology program. Also, I felt like the people there were just like me. Although they worked hard, they liked to play hard as well. Although they are a party school, they have a ~25% acceptance rate, which means that its better than the vast majority of schools. Hard work and fun, and I am on par with their stats. I thought it would be perfect.
However, football has given me opportunities for other schools. JHU has given me looks and has emailed me that I am a top prospect. I feel JHU would easily get me into a med school of some kind, however, it would be MUCH harder work, and I would have football on top of all of the work. And from what I read online, it is all work at this school. Constant studying. I know for a fact I would be less happy at JHU then Lehigh, but would it give me better opportunities? I am on the bottom 25% for JHU stats for admissions, so I will definetly NOT have an excellent GPA there. I can pretty much guarantee a good GPA at Lehigh.
My girlfriend has a 1470/1600 on her SAT. She decided to settle for Lehigh (not because of me, but because it was the next best on her list of colleges that she could afford). She is completely confident that she will get into a med school from Lehigh as well. As for me, I am unsure. I asked her if she got into Hopkins and Lehigh, which would she choose? She chose Lehigh, because she would be in over her head and she would go insane. She would never enjoy herself. She is smarter than me, so I am unsure how I will make it there and enjoy myself. She says that doing great at an average school is better than doing average at a great school. So I have a few questions:
-
What would look better, an average GPA from Hopkins or a near perfect GPA at Lehigh?
-
If you were in my situation, what would you do? I feel its either almost guaranteed happiness (Lehigh) or almost guarunteed success (JHU).
-
Do you agree in that doing great at an average school is better than doing average at a great school? Or do you disagree?
Thank you for all the help. I understand this is more of a therapy session, but my college counselor is out for vacation!
