Engineer when to do? Low level

Hi,

I bought the game early doors but never upgraded to Horizons until recently and I pissed away any credits I made on blackjack and hookers.

My question is when I should consider start engineering? Is there a size of ship etc where it is not worth it? I love my vulture but is it not worth the effort.

Thanks for any help.
