Just stumbled upon this subreddit, can anyone tell me why bitcoin is worth so much? And is it too late to invest?

My only prior knowledge of bitcoin was that it was used on the dark web to buy drugs. And most online retailers I see don't accept bitcoin as a form of payment so could someone explain to me why it's worth 4K$ atm and rising? I find the whole thing fascinating and want to invest some extra cash into it.
